John Rambo Prequel Movie Begins Filming: Origin Story of the First Blood Hero

For years, Sylvester Stallone has teased the possibility of exploring the origins of John Rambo, the elite soldier whose trauma defined a generation of action cinema. Now, that vision is finally taking shape. Lionsgate and Millennium Films have officially struck a deal to expand the franchise.

The Rambo prequel film, titled John Rambo, is set to explore the origin story of the iconic character during his time as a young soldier in the Vietnam War.

A New Face for a Classic Icon

In a move that has surprised many action purists, Noah Centineo (Black Adam, The Recruit) is set to star as young John Rambo. While Centineo is largely known for his roles in romantic comedies and spy thrillers, this project represents a massive pivot into gritty, prestige action.

The film will be helmed by Jalmari Helander, the visionary director behind the stylized historical action hit Sisu. With Helander at the wheel, fans can expect a visceral, high-stakes look at Rambo’s transformation from an “all-American” star athlete to a lethal tool of the state.

It won’t be as dark as the last two Rambos … It’s going to be a little more adventurous, and I hope to inspire a new generation of 10-year-olds to go into the forest to play Rambo

Expanding the Rambo Universe

The deal between Lionsgate and Millennium Media isn’t limited to a single film. The partnership grants Lionsgate the rights to develop “derivative works,” including television series and potential spin-offs.

This suggests that John Rambo could be the launchpad for a multi-platform “Rambo Universe,” mirroring the expansive treatment given to franchises like John Wick.

Lionsgate has confirmed that John Rambo has officially begun filming, with production kicking off in Thailand.
